Supporters of ousted state Sen. Hiram Monserrate are claiming his rival, Assemblyman Jose Peralta, is a pawn of “mega-rich gay fanatics” in an anti-gay flyer being handed out at churches in their Queens district. Monserrate and Peralta – both Democrats – and several other candidates will face off in a special election next Tuesday to fill Monserrate’s old seat.

Anti-Gay Protesters Under Supreme Court Scrutiny

The US Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether vitriolic anti-gay protestors who picket the funerals of US soldiers are protected by free speech laws. The emotionally-charged case was brought by the family of US Marine Matthew Snyder, who was killed in combat in Iraq in 2006. His family organized a private Christian funeral for him in Maryland that attracted members of the radical Westboro Church led by Baptist preacher Fred Phelps.

Thousands of Portuguese poured onto the streets of Lisbon Sunday in protest of a gay marriage law currently seeking the president’s approval, the Spanish news agency EFE reported. Organizers estimated the event, called “in defense of the family,” attracted a crowd of 5,000, but no official figures were reported.
